So I have two competing theories. One, this is all in Fae’s head. She never woke up after the creature attack and the creature is spinning this scenario because it feeds on endorphins or something and it needs Fae’s mind in a state that produces said chemicals. It uses Nell as a self insert to keep the story rolling. Cho might also be part of this shared illusion if he lost to the creature or he might represent the resistant part of Fae’s mind. If it is him, he seems like he’s just playing along as he tries to find a way out of this. He seems like he’s given Nell several suspicious looks since the attack like he knows that isn’t Nell. My competing theory is that the alien is a full on shape shifter. Its form seemed pretty pliable when it first attacked. When it attached to Fae it learned a lot about her and her trauma. Cho interrupted what it was doing and maybe even got the upper hand on it when it assumed the form of Nell and started communicating. Its all conjecture at this point but it maybe made an offer to Cho. It could replace Nell, alter Fae’s memories, and it would be like Nell never died. The depression that drove Fae and Cho apart would be gone which gives him an incentive to play along. He’s hating himself for lying but is probably convincing himself that Fae’s happier so why not?

A very compelling set of theories! Hopefully through the hints given and the continued exploration of the narrative, we’ll manage to find the truth… Though, to be honest… It could just be another Total Recall situation at the end… Who is to say? 😛

That’s the fun part of anything sci-fi. Parallel universe, implanted memories, no matter what your theory is there’s always another one and guessing at a mystery is often more fun than actually solving it.

Both the ‘all in her head’ and the ‘shapeshifter + memory manipulation’ theory crossed my mind as well. The ‘did’ however, throws a (small) wrench in both.
Fact of the matter is, that it puts ‘Cho’ in the know.
And, judging from Fae’s facial expression, she knows too.
Cause that’s a ‘Oh great, now you dun’ goofed’ expression.
Which begs the question, why BOTH of them would play along with this ‘stand-in’ brother…and why Cho’s and Fae’s relationship seems far better since the run-in.
So yeah…the theory, that Cho is actually covering for the shapeshifter, cause it is ‘good’ for Fae (and his relationship with her) is good…but Fae’s reaction doesn’t look like ‘confused’. It looks like sheer terror.

I noticed. The way the background goes black it almost looks like the illusion just shattered and she did not want to face that reality. If someone were really attached to a sweet lie they might not want to face the ugly truth, maybe even being able to lie to themselves to keep it going. I’m sure we will learn more as this develops.
