‘That’s not how it went’, you say…but are you sure about that? Nightmares may well be inspired and fueled by memories and experiences, but that doesn’t mean they have to be tell the truth.
Like for example recently I had a stupid nightmare, where the bus driver had a heart attack and I had to jump behind the wheel to keep the bus from crashing.
Woke up with good old cold sweat.
That, for example, never happened.
Nightmares are the visualization of our fears, so the previous nightmares may well NOT have been a memory at all, but much rather a fabrication…as if she blamed herself for not being able to save him after all.
Even if the depicted events didn’t happen…at least not right how they transpired.
Our minds are powerful and they know how to protect themselves.
When faced with a trauma we aren’t ready to deal with, something so terrifying that we can’t even think about it without running the risk of having a heart attack or a nervous breakdown, details are quick to be muddled and/or downright forgotten.
Also: Dang, that’s one stretchy tail. I can imagine that’s not how Cho imagined ‘tapping that ass’ as the saying goes.

Well, in this particular part, the “dream” has been a reoccurring thing for quite some time for Fae. Hence Cho’s “The Nightmare Again?” line. (and instead of showing the nightmare multiple times, one seemed enough as to not make it long in the tooth.
But yes, Nightmare and dreams do not coincide with reality most of the time.

Fay is currently dealing with a most likely parasitic incursion, doing all kinds of things to her body chemistry.
This may also well be her brain trying to shield itself from shattering by coming up with a ‘the way it should’ve gone’.
The brother saved, the hinge paid off, her relationship with Cho not in tatters due to the constant feeling of guilt.
Right now, we are likely seeing the events how she herself would’ve wanted them to go.
But the actual question is…who will be the one waking up, once the critter nesting within her (Voidscrat, I believe it was called?)…is done with what it’s doing?
Cause I somehow don’t think they have the equipment to purge it from Fay at this juncture.
